Exploring the depths of Naples: a journey into the intricate underground labyrinth
Dec 6, 2023
The submerged city of Baia has its roots in the ancient city of Baiae, a place of great importance and popularity during the Roman era. It was renowned for its thermal springs, luxurious palaces, and seaview villas that attracted nobles and illustrious figures of the time, including the Scipios, Gaius Marius, Julius Caesar, Cicero, Pompey the Great, Mark Antony, and even the emperors themselves, who built an imperial palace in Baia where Augustus, Tiberius, Claudius, Caligula, Nero, Hadrian, and Alexander Severus stayed.
However, due to the volcanic nature of the area, the phenomenon of bradyseism over the years has caused the sinking of the coastline into the sea. The first signs of the slow downward movement that led to the disappearance of the coastal strip began in the late 4th century AD. The inexorable sinking of the coast led to the abandonment of the seaside villas but also allowed the remains to reach the present day, preserving some evidence of the ancient splendor.
Today, the submerged city is part of the Archaeological Park of the Campi Flegrei and offers a window into the past with remains of marvelous mosaics, villas, and statues, providing an idea of the rich and sumptuous architecture of the time. For archaeology enthusiasts, it is a must-visit destination. Through snorkeling or, for the more courageous, diving, one can explore the ancient remains of villas and structures, immersing oneself in the past and imagining life in those times.
Among the main visible submerged buildings is the statue of the Nymphaeum from the Claudian era, located at a depth of 7 meters, or the villa attributed to the Piso family.
