History and Origins:
In ancient times, the island of Procida was connected to the municipality of Monte di Procida by a thin strip of land. Over the centuries, both communities developed their cultural identity and unique traditions while remaining united by the same roots. The costume of Monte di Procida and Procida women is one of the elements that keeps their bond strong.
The story begins in the 19th century when the women of Procida and Monte di Procida wore traditional clothes that were influenced by Mediterranean and maritime cultures, ranging from simpler versions for everyday use to more elaborate ones adorned with gold for special occasions. The name "Graziella" is inspired by a character from the novel of Alphonse de Lamartine, published in 1849, capturing people's imagination and inspiring the idea of the traditional costume, that today is predominantly associated with Procida island.
Characteristics of the costume:
The dress is a very feminine, elegant and colorful dress that evokes the bright colors of the island. It consists of a long and wide skirt, often made of light cotton, with elegant pleats that give a sense of movement and grace, paired with an apron. The skirt is paired also with a fitted bodice or a waist cincher corset, often decorated with lace, that enhances the feminine silhouette.
One of the distinctive features of this costume is the shawl, made with a light and transparent fabric that was worn on the shoulders, giving a touch of elegance and mystery, and the headdress, often made with cotton or linen scarf, adorned with fringes that frame the wearer's face.
Colors and Patterns:
The colors of the fabrics used in this costume were bright and cheerful, such as blue, yellow, purple and green, mostly used in festive versions, while for everyday use were predominantly white, black and brown. The predominant motifs are floral embroidery, the waves of the sea and details that recall the maritime traditions of the island, often there were gold embroidery that embellished the clothes used for special occasions.
Cultural Importance:
The traditional costume of the "Graziella" is much more than a simple folk dress. It represents an important part of the cultural identity of the island and its inhabitants. Despite the changes over time, the "Graziella" has managed to survive thanks to the commitment of the inhabitants of the island in preserving their history and culture. Today, thanks to local tailors and cultural associations, the production and preservation of these costumes are a pride for the island and an attraction for visitors. Every year takes place the traditional competition of Graziella, showcasing young and beautiful women in traditional costumes that have been handed down for centuries. Also in Procida there is a real museum dedicated to this costume, I give you the link below:

In collaboration with the talented Chiara from YukiArtLab, we have chosen to pay homage to the enchanting dress of the "Graziella" through her wonderful creation: a paperdoll inspired by the traditional costume. Every detail has been cared for with love and attention, recreating the harmony of colors and patterns that characterize it.
This collaboration was born from our common passion for promoting and valorizing local traditions. We are committed to preserving and spreading the culture of these places, making it accessible to a wider audience.
