The Phlegraean Fields area is caracterized by a huge volcanic caldera,that formed million of years ago. Just think that this caldera consists of over 20 volcanic vents, such as Averno Lake, Solfatara, Monte Nuovo and so on.
Characterized by its volcanic nature, the Phlegraean Fields boast geothermical phenomena that have been exploited since ancient Roman times. In fact the area was the heart of the first Greek-Roman colony in Italy! The Phlegraean Fields are a true tresure trove, from Pozzuoli to Bacoli, where places narrate mhyts and legends of a bygone era. The Flavium Amphitheater, the Sibyl Cave, the Piscina Mirabilis, are just a few of the most significant archaeological sites in the area. Not to mention the Underwater city of Baia, a real submerged Pompeii! Why submerged? Due to the phenomena of bradyseism which still subjetcs the ground to constant uplift today and caused the thermal town of Baia, to sink.
